NPHET expected to recommend easing of Covid-19 restrictions

The National Public Health Emergency Team (NPHET) will meet today amid expectations that it will recommend the lifting of restrictions.

The Taoiseach told a meeting of his party last night that Government will on Friday make positive announcements about the ending of restrictions.

There is a strong feeling politically that the public health restrictions could now be lifted quite swiftly.

Micheál Martin told his party colleagues the country was well beyond the peak of the Omicron surge.

He said the situation was much better than anticipated and Government can act on that.

The Taoiseach said he would make things very clear on Friday both for the short and medium term.

It is expected now that the 8pm closing time rule will cease early next week, and large numbers will be able to attend outdoor and indoor events again soon.

The pace of the unwinding of almost all restrictions is now set to be a quick one.

However, the wearing of masks in crowded areas is likely to continue.
